Periodontal disease is an infection of the supporting structures of teeth including the gums and bone. The infection is caused mainly by bacteria that live in dental plaque, a sticky film that forms around your teeth. Other factors which can also be attributed to affecting the health of the gums and bone include:
Smoking or Tobacco use
- Diabetes
- Stress
- Genetics
- Medications
- Pregnancy
- Poor nutrition
Treatment
Appropriate treatment for periodontal disease depends on the severity of the disease.
Scaling and Root Planing, or “deep cleaning” is appropriate for treatment of mild cases of periodontal disease. This entails removal of all the debris, plaque and calculus, from the tooth both above and below the gum line.
Periodontal Surgery, or “Pocket Reduction Surgery” is appropriate for treatment of more advanced cases of periodontal disease. This procedure allows better access to remove debris, plaque and calculus, from the tooth below the gum line. Additionally, after healing, the surface area below the gum line is reduced, thereby allowing the patient better access to maintain the gums clean and healthy in years to come.
